The United States Forest Service is planning to start working soon in the HEADWATERS portion of the Buffalo National River. Their proposed actions include 

11,000 acres of timber thinning and harvest, 11,000 acres of prescribed burning, 70 miles of road construction for timber removal, 20 miles of dozer lines for fire breaks, and 3,000 acres of herbicide treatment.

  There has been a suggested designation change from a "National River" to a "National Park & Preserve". This is a very controversial idea among local residents, as well as many other people who enjoy visiting the area. Our view is that the potential problems resulting from additional tourists to this delicate natural place will certainly outweigh stated benefits.
