Things to do in Kingston, AR Facebook Page

The picturesque community of Kingston is just over the mountain from Boxley Valley, about 15 minutes to the west on Hwy. 21. The tiny square features the historic Bunch General Store, which is currently unccupied as a busines, but we hear rumors that something big may possibly be in the works- stay tuned! Additionally, there is a bank (Anstaff Bank) that operates in another historic building with old-time teller cages and the original safe in the lobby. Pictures of these are on our pics page. Kingston Station Store, which is in Madison County, is the closest place that sells BEER and WINE, as well as grill food and some basic provisions. Note that Arkansas Law prohibits Sunday alcohol sales. Don't forget to "check out" the library, featuring good reads from local author Abby Burnett.

Circle Yoga Shala

A school for yoga, creative movement, and self-inquiry in Arkansas' Ozark mountains. Visit their website (link above) or Facebook page, https://www.facebook.com/circleyogashala/, to learn more about their activities and how to participate.

Gyobutsuji Zen Monastery

Gyobutsuji (Practice Buddha Monastery) is a small mountain monastery located off Hwy. 21 between Kingston and Ponca devoted to the practice of zazen. Zazen is the form of meditation at the very heart of Zen practice. In fact, Zen is known as the “meditation school” of Buddhism. Basically, zazen is the study of the self. The great Master Dogen said, “To study the Buddha Way is to study the self, to study the self is to forget the self, and to forget the self is to be enlightened by the ten thousand things.” To be enlightened by the ten thousand things is to recognize the unity of the self and the ten thousand things.

Suggested Reading

There are many books and articles about the area, but these we consider "must reads" for those interested in learning the details. These can be obtained through the links below, or purchased in most of the area outfitters and stores.

The Battle for the Buffalo River- Written in 1992 by Dr. Neil Compton. Without a doubt, Dr. Compton was the one person most responsible for us having the Buffalo River to float and enjoy today.

Buffalo River Handbook- The Complete Guide to the Buffalo River. A sourcebook covering the river's geology, wildlife, plants...and more. A guidebook for all 146 river miles and more than 120 miles of paths and trails.

Tim is our local "Ansel Adams", having photographed and documented most (if not all) of the area rivers, streams, bluffs, trees, birds, waterfalls and trails.

William McNamara Watercolors

OK, not really reading material, but "must see" artwork. Bill is also a local, residing up on Cave Mountain, who paints absolutely stunning scenes of the area's features, such as waterfalls, the Buffalo River, and colorful foliage. In his collaborative book with Tim Ernst, many of his paintings rival Tim's photographs in realism and ability to capture the spectacular beauty of his subject.
